Working alongside Rockford Construction and Reed Krueger & Associates, AMDG coordinated design efforts to transform the upper levels and rooftop of this historic building into a modern penthouse that offers the homeowner their desired living and entertaining spaces embedded in the heart of an urban setting.
Among many examples of modern design expression is its magnificent staircase, which serves as a central point of vertical circulation for the two-story suite and frames the stunning city views.
Retrofitting a historic building to fit this modern penthouse design posed several complex technical challenges. The team worked mindfully to navigate the irregularities of the older building while honoring the client’s well-defined budget.
These parameters required creative and thoughtful use of basic elements like trim and doors, executed with clean and precise detailing within an irregular historic envelope. The technical complexities of building on a rooftop necessitated careful detailing and coordination; including the creation of an outdoor living space that seamlessly integrates with indoor living space and provides panoramic downtown views while shielding against the wind—an essential feature for high-rise urban dwellings.
