project overview

After decades on Gull Lake, Jane and Joe were deeply connected to their community and their tree-filled lakeside property. But as their need for a more accommodating gathering place grew, they recognized their aging family cottage could no longer keep up. Add to that a long, steep driveway that made winter visits a challenge. A fresh start was needed, and the couple knew exactly what they wanted: a lake home that could charm as effortlessly as it functions—a true family retreat to honor the past and prepare for future generations.

The homeowners didn’t need to go far to find a design partner for their dream home. Their neighbors recommended AMDG after their own experience designing their lake home with the team. Like their friends, Jane and Joe were looking to make the lake a focal point for family get-togethers. But, first, they needed a solution for the property’s dramatic slope.

maximizing the lake

Given the property’s steep natural grade, AMDG proposed building the home into the slope. This would make the entry to the home clearly visible from the driveway while also making the lake a focal point from every room. Meanwhile, the walk-out lower level would serve as a gathering area for family members and guests. Equipped with an inviting bar and entertainment space in the center, the layout is flanked by three bedrooms (including one bunkroom for grandchildren). The family especially likes the lake-facing “car wash” entry, complete with a rinse-off area and dog tub for sandy feet and paws after a long day at the lake.

infused with coastal charm

A home that exudes charm was a priority for Jane, who served as interior designer on the project. Drawing upon her professional background, she crafted a Cape Cod-inspired retreat that nods to the 1922 cottage that once stood on the site. Inside, the coastal design theme is punctuated by expert millwork from the teams at DeVries & Onderlinde Builders and Kirshman Kitchen Design Studio. This includes a nautically themed compass entry floor inlay as well as the Chris-Craft-inspired lower-level bar designed to echo the boat’s classic transom.

designed to endure

When asked to choose their favorite space in the home, the couple pauses to consider. It could be the sunset-facing porch just outside the dining room; or the lower-level bar and gathering area (complete with fireplace); or simply the gorgeous millwork and stunning lake views no matter what room you’re in. What’s easy to agree on is the enduring quality of the home. Inside and out, materials were carefully chosen to withstand daily usage patterns and Michigan’s changing weather conditions. Fitting for a home designed to create lasting memories.

AMDG was so accommodating and easy to work with. We were blown away by their ability to help us visualize design and make changes in real-time. We couldn’t be happier.
