building on faith: St. Paul Center’s mission-driven design
The St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology stands as a beacon of Catholic identity and hospitality. Designed with timeless elegance, the research institute’s new headquarters building reflects its mission to inspire faith and community. Architectural language harmonizes with the neighboring Franciscan University campus, featuring a tower with stained glass logo along with commissioned iconography that weaves the organization’s story throughout. The northern face of expansive glass illuminates an open stair connecting three levels, showcasing thoughtful integration of light and movement.
The design delivers versatile spaces that align with the Center’s mission. A flexible meeting hall transforms effortlessly into a worship space, complete with advanced AV/tech integration. Catering kitchens support mass gatherings, conferences, and Bible studies, while participants and staff enjoy amenities such as outdoor decks offering sweeping views of the Ohio River.
The lower level includes state-of-the-art studios, enabling the creation of high-quality digital and print resources.
The site, once a refuse dump, posed significant soil stability challenges. AMDG and its engineering collaborators designed a structural subsystem that reached the bedrock, ensuring safety and longevity. Navigating zoning and municipal hurdles required perseverance and expertise, achieved through close collaboration with Massaro Construction Group.
From initial concepts to the final details of furniture and millwork, AMDG worked alongside the client, builder, and design teams. Together, they created a space that serves as a hub for the St. Paul Center’s growing mission—a space for gathering, worship, and inspiration that will serve current and future generations.
