building a community of worship
St. John Paul II Catholic Parish had a vision to create a new church building design to meet the needs of their growing parish community. Having purchased an existing building that proved inadequate for their worship environment, the parish enlisted AMDG to assist in designing a sacred space where tradition meets innovation.
The design highlights a raised altar, central aisle, and baptismal font, aligning with the parish’s emphasis on procession and faith expression. The exterior blends substantial stone elements with agrarian-inspired siding, honoring both permanence and place. Custom liturgical furnishings and a statue of St. John Paul II at the entry invite parishioners into a sanctuary that embodies their Catholic identity.
The site presented zoning and wetland constraints, requiring careful placement and phased planning. AMDG collaborated closely with civil engineers, acoustic consultants, and the construction partner to ensure the design respected environmental and budgetary parameters while achieving the parish’s vision.
Beginning with a master plan and developing a phased approach allowed future flexibility in expansion without compromising the integrity of the current building.
Phase one of the master plan brought to life an 8,800 sq ft church, accommodating 350 worshippers with a vision for future growth to seat 600. A narthex, sacristy, and warming kitchen complement the nave and sanctuary, supporting both spiritual and communal activities. AMDG’s holistic approach to site design included expanded parking, a pedestrian-friendly connection, and plans for a future rectory and bell tower. The result is a church that can grow with its community and maintain a reverent, intimate atmosphere.
AMDG engaged the congregation in developing design principles for the new church resulting in a house of prayer that feels welcoming and sacred. The parishioners’ values—accessibility, reverence, and warmth—are reflected in every detail, ensuring a worship space designed to meet their needs now and into the future.
