innovation meets legacy:
modern workplace architecture
This downtown corner once stood as a symbol of missed opportunity—a mid-century office building with no entrance from the street creating a lifeless urban corner, isolating itself from the vibrancy of downtown. Working with AMDG, the client saw not just a structure, but a chance to reimagine this space as a welcoming beacon that celebrates the city and invites connection.
The transformation of this historic building involved constructing an additional floor, expanding the footprint, and integrating a bold glass curtain wall. This redesign embraced the potential of the location, offering stunning vistas from new upper decks and fostering an inviting relationship with the adjacent Plaza. The project’s signature feature—a Jaume Plensa sculpture—was carefully integrated to symbolize the building’s new identity as a community anchor. AMDG’s collaboration with the city and the artist ensured the sculpture became iconic, with its base seamlessly designed to accommodate lighting and subgrade parking ventilation.
Exterior design decisions directly communicated with the building’s interiors, including workspaces filled with natural light and access to outdoor patios on upper floors. Working within the constraints of the original steel and concrete structure, and leveraging 3D modeling to ensure technical precision, every element was intentionally curated to create a high-performance, human-centered environment with a stunning aesthetic.
In this highly collaborative effort, AMDG and 16 different design partners turned challenges into creative opportunities, ensuring the project’s success. Blending client-centered design with the team’s technical expertise, this downtown workspace delivers a high-performance, visually striking corporate office space, fulfilling the client’s vision for a workplace that will equip the next generation of leaders while preserving the organization’s legacy in the heart of the city.
