designing for the future of work and delivering collaborative community

The newly renovated Hope Boerigter Center stands as a beacon of innovation and purpose. This 10,600+ sq ft transformation within Hope College’s DeWitt Cultural Center integrates three vital campus programs: the Boerigter Center for Calling and Career, Alumni and Family Engagement, and the Center for Leadership. By blending mission-driven design with forward-thinking functionality, the renovation reshaped two lower-level floors into a thriving collaborative hub for students, alumni, and staff.

To align with Hope College’s vision, the design fosters community through openness and accessibility. A two-story central gathering space connects flexible learning labs, private offices, and shared meeting areas, allowing seamless adaptability. Natural light streams through transoms and glass partitions, imbuing even the most interior spaces with brightness. Acoustic panels thoughtfully balance functionality with a modern aesthetic, creating inviting environments for reflection and interaction.

The innovation lab, equipped with state-of-the-art technology and flexible layouts, empowers students and staff to engage in presentations, group work, or individual pursuits. At the heart of the renovation, a monumental staircase weaves connectivity throughout the space, symbolizing the center’s mission to nurture lifelong learning and leadership.

This project required both creativity and precision to harmonize the diverse needs of three organizations under one roof. Working closely together the client, Erhardt Construction, and AMDG Architects navigated the complexities of updating an aging structure within budget and on a tight five-month timeline. Deep collaboration with furniture partners Trellis and Herman Miller ensured ergonomic and sustainable furnishings were incorporated and reflected the college’s brand.

The reimagined Boerigter Center is a dynamic extension of Hope College’s mission to inspire community, leadership, and calling. By blending natural elements, advanced technology, and flexible layouts, the center positions itself as a gateway to innovation and connection for generations to come..
