supporting athletic legacy and tradition

In 2016, Catholic Central High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan, unveiled the new Cougar Stadium and improvements to the Catholic Athletic Trails (CAT) facility—a transformative project embodying the school’s rich athletic tradition and vision for community engagement. Designed with a capacity of 10,000 spectators, the stadium integrates seamlessly with its surrounding fields, creating a design that enhances community, viewing, and playing experiences. This athletic hub stands as a symbol of excellence and tradition for generations to come.

Every detail of the transformed CAT reflects intentional design and innovation. The main stadium, set into a natural bowl, provides dynamic sightlines and an intimate connection to the action. Plazas and elevated viewing areas accommodate both large crowds and smaller, more intimate events. Supporting spaces include one team meeting room, one film room, locker rooms, and a state-of-the-art press box, ensuring a premium experience for athletes and attendees alike. The facility also incorporates a Grotto and memorial garden, emphasizing the school’s Catholic identity while offering serene spaces for reflection.

Safety and maintenance were prioritized with improvements to the substructure of fields, while thoughtful AV and lighting solutions were achieved through collaboration with community stakeholders.

The CAT facility’s journey from concept to completion required extensive planning and collaboration. URS (AECOM), Rockford Construction and AMDG Architects partnered closely with the Diocese, school leadership, and donors to create a space that fulfills both athletic and communal purposes. The facility celebrates the Cougar legacy through hall-of-fame installations and branding that reinforce school pride and tradition.

This project transcends athletics, fostering community, inspiring students, and reinforcing Catholic Central’s commitment to excellence. From hosting local games to accommodating regional events, the CAT facility exemplifies a space where tradition and innovation successfully  team together.

AMDG’s ability to build personal relationships with everyone involved and their unique ability to dive into their clients’ needs and expectations is fantastic. They have a tremendous ability, based on their successful experience and vast knowledge, to have productive meetings, design and outcomes. They are a family and faith-based group that takes great pride in every person they meet and every project they work on.
