expanding a dynamic
learning environment

Guided by a strategic plan formalized in 2020, Bethany Christian Schools was ready to expand its curriculum to include lower elementary grades by adding a Pre-K through 4th grade wing to welcome younger students to their vibrant learning community. The school fosters a hands-on approach to education and a commitment to academic excellence. Bethany’s model promotes integration of faith, learning and service and an intentional commitment to building a Christian community. AMDG led Bethany through a master planning process and helped Bethany distill design principles that guided the design team through the completion of the project: “life giving, flexibility, student-centered, incremental, connected, excellent and sustainable.”

The new addition supports Bethany’s commitment to holistic education. Lower elementary classrooms benefit from shared learning commons, are equipped for art and baking to provide immersive learning opportunities, and utilize thoughtfully

designed mudrooms for a seamless connection to outdoor learning and play areas. Skylights deliver abundant natural light, reduce energy consumption, and promote student well-being. AMDG re-imaged the required stormwater detention area as an outdoor amphitheater, blending sustainability with functionality to both enhance the student-centered experience, and navigate the technical requirements of the local storm water ordinance on a constrained site.

AMDG Architects partnered closely with Bethany Christian Schools and builder, E.F. Hooley Construction, to align every design element with the school’s mission and vision. The project team worked strategically and collaboratively to deliver the project ahead of schedule and under budget. The successful result strengthens Bethany’s ability to nurture and prepare students for their journey and prepare them to participate in God’s work in the world.

We very much appreciate the work of the AMDG team. Someone recently asked what we would do differently and what would we do the same if Bethany was starting the project all over again. Without hesitation I said “keep AMDG.”
