reimagining the patient experience

Medical spaces often come across as cold and clinical for patients. Award-winning plastic surgeon, Dr. Brad Bengtson, envisioned a very different experience. With AMDG leading the design process, they were able to create a space that welcomes visitors at first sight. This explains the inviting Northern Michigan cottage-inspired exterior and a practice setting that puts patient needs at the forefront.

To maximize patient privacy and practice efficiency, the practice’s surgical wing is designed with its own discrete patient entrance, waiting room, and staff area. Dr. Bengtson’s office is also strategically separated from the patient space, while still offering direct access to two onsite Operating Rooms.

Becoming a Center of Excellence for education and teaching is a prime goal for the practice. To help achieve it, AMDG assisted in the design of the technically advanced boardroom where up to 20 visitors can view a live digital feed of the operating rooms. Live webinars can also be arranged for observers who are not on site.

The Bengtson Center For Aesthetics & Plastic Surgery has a reputation for putting patients first. For example, arriving patients are greeted by a concierge to help navigate them through their visit. To reinforce the patient-centric mission, AMDG collaborated with Kathryn Chaplow Interior Design to design a suite that flows seamlessly, promotes privacy, and provides a reassuring sense of calm.

Eleven months after breaking ground, the Bengtson Center was open for business in its new location. The warm trappings of home inform a design that balances privacy with practice efficiency. In keeping with the mission of the practice, patients come away from the experience knowing their needs come first. Much like the practice itself, the final result speaks for itself.

AMDG was completely open to our crazy ideas. They facilitated every detail to make things work, and never said ‘Sorry, we can’t do that.’ The process was absolutely seamless. To be able to get something down on paper that we were thinking about and make it come to life is pretty incredible.

delineating space

Considerable planning went into the division of patient and staff spaces while still allowing for intuitive workflow. AMDG created a plan that honors the patient need for privacy and, at the same time, offers staff members their own getaway spaces. One example is the shared lower level community area. Designed with individual practice kitchenettes, it serves as a venue to eat, relax, and socialize with members of other practices.

comforts of home

AMDG worked closely with Kathryn Chaplow Interior Design to offer patients the comforts of home. Luxurious materials and finishes serve to put minds at ease. Gracious spaces, including the operating room, have access to abundant natural light. And the practice’s male patients and guests enjoy a separate waiting room complete with wet bar, comfy leather chairs, and a 75-inch flat screen television.
