Presenting a multifaceted challenge, this project aimed to consolidate multiple offices into a single downtown headquarters while celebrating the organization’s rich history and preparing for a dynamic future. The balance between legacy and vision was achieved through a tailored floorplan and curated amenities that reflect the organization’s values, inspire collaboration, and support a multi-generational workforce.
The client’s primary goal—creating a headquarters that fosters connectivity and collaboration—guided design decisions. AMDG developed a flexible, efficient floorplan that prioritizes shared spaces while still supporting department-specific needs. Meeting spaces of varying sizes are strategically distributed throughout the building to encourage cross-team interaction, while the open-plan workstations are positioned to promote transparency and collaboration. Key communal areas, such as the expansive café and a boardroom offering panoramic views of Grand Rapids, serve as hubs for employees to gather, brainstorm, or recharge. Private workspaces for key departments like HR, and finance were designed in consultation with leadership to meet their distinct requirements while maintaining proximity to shared resources. These specialized zones seamlessly integrate into the overall layout, reinforcing the client’s vision for a unified corporate culture.
Amenities extend beyond functionality to reflect the company’s commitment to employee wellbeing. A monumental staircase adjacent to a dramatic 40-foot living wall encourages movement between floors and draws natural elements into the workspace. Outdoor terraces, an entertainment lounge, and flexible meeting areas provide employees with spaces to relax, collaborate, and connect.
Managing a collaboration of 16 different design partners, AMDG helped ensure that the client’s vision was executed seamlessly. Working closely with Rockford Construction and Michigan-based suppliers, emphasis was placed on regional craftsmanship and sustainability. By selecting local artisans for elements such as furnishings, rugs, and artwork, the design tied the project to its West Michigan roots, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to its community.
More than just a workspace, this downtown headquarters reflects the company’s enduring values and ambitious vision for the future. Through intentional design and meticulous planning, the team created a space that balances legacy and innovation, providing a foundation for generations of leadership to thrive.
