Steve is passionate about designing outdoor spaces that feel like a natural extension of the overall environment. Instead of standing out, he believes landscape architecture is best when it feels seamless and intuitive – so much so that people don’t even realize it’s been thoughtfully designed. To him, the outdoors isn’t separate from the interior, rather it’s all part of one connected experience.
Steve’s background spans a wide variety of landscape architecture projects, from historic restoration in national parks and U.S. Embassy design to high school athletic facilities and school site design.
He received his bachelor’s degree in history from Calvin College and his bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from Michigan State University.

In his free time, Steve designs complex wooden toys with moving parts, then writes step-by-step instruction books with photos so that other woodworkers can build his designs. He currently has 14 published books.
