Who We Are

design with a purpose

rooted in service

As a full-service residential and commercial design firm, we anchor our actions, values, and purpose in a commitment to serve. Our approach is highly collaborative, engaging every stakeholder involved in the process of creating spaces that resonate. We celebrate every home, workplace, educational, recreational, and spiritual environment we’ve had a hand in creating and are grateful to use our talents to achieve a higher purpose.

More than three decades since our inception, AMDG continues to uphold the principles on which we were founded, creating technically sound spaces capable of uplifting the lives of our clients and their communities.

intentional foundation

AMDG began as a partnership–four architects wrestling with how to bring greater purpose to their practice. At the time, three of them were University of Michigan Architecture School students. Calvin Jen, who founded the firm in 1992, was their professor. Before having a single client, the four already agreed on a name, an acronym rooted in the Latin phrase Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam (To the greater glory of God). The idea behind it was clear: design should serve more than the designer. This mindset drives our work to honor our faith, serve others, and contribute to a greater good through architecture.
