Who We Are

design with a purpose

rooted in service

A full-service residential and commercial design firm, we anchor our actions, values, and purpose in the commitment to serve others. Our approach is highly collaborative, engaging all stakeholders in a process toward creating something deeply meaningful and impactful. We celebrate every home, workplace, educational, recreational, and spiritual environment that we’ve been a part of creating and believe it’s an honor to use our gifts and talents in the service of others.

Three (plus) decades since the firm’s inception, AMDG continues to uphold the same foundational principles that guide decisions, actions, and interactions—not just in the technical execution of projects, but in creating spaces that truly uplift and enhance the lives of our clients and their communities.

intentional foundation

AMDG began as a partnership – four architects wrestling with how to bring greater purpose to their practice. At the time, three of them were University of Michigan Architecture School students. Calvin Jen, who founded the firm in 1992, was their professor. Before having a single client, the four already agreed on a name—an acronym rooted in the Latin phrase Ad majorem Dei gloriam (To the greater glory of God). Not just a name, AMDG was a belief that design should serve more than the designer. This mindset drives our work to honor our faith, serve others, and contribute to a greater good through architecture.
