A Seamless Union of Past and Present

We’re honored to share that one of our recent projects has been highlighted in Traverse Northern Michigan magazine. The article spotlights “the pièce de résistance to the entire project”—a custom-designed pavilion by AMDG Architects and built by J. Peterson Homes.

Positioned alongside a beloved family cabin, the rustic modern structure was imagined as more than an accessory building. It serves as a visual and functional bridge between the original log structure and a future more contemporary home on the adjacent lot. The pavilion’s materiality and form intentionally juxtapose old and new—preserving the cabin’s historic presence while introducing a refined transition toward what’s next.

A Deliberate Design Narrative

In designing the pavilion, AMDG approached the project with a respect for legacy and a forward-thinking lens. Detailed joinery, warm wood finishes, and contextual proportions ground the structure in its wooded setting. At the same time, expansive views and simplified lines introduce a contemporary sensibility—one that hints at the architectural language of what’s to come.

The result is a space that not only enhances the homeowner’s experience while at their lake house, but also deepens their connection to the land and legacy they hold dear.

Collaboration at the Core

This project exemplifies AMDG’s belief that good design is not just about aesthetics—it’s about listening well, honoring context, and building with purpose. Working closely with the Haadsma family, the pavilion became a touchstone for their evolving vision—celebrating both heritage and horizon.
